| Description: | 3c (10A) orange brown pair on cover to New Orleans. Letter datelined Rodney, Miss, Dec 17, 1851. The Steamer Glendy Burke picked this up as a way letter on its way to New Orleans where it entered the mails with the red New Orleans Dec 19th CDS, and the stamps were cancelled with the black New Orleans grid killer. Marked "way 1" at New Orleans. This is a scarce usage as it is an over-weight letter, thus the double 3c rate, plus a single 1c for the way fee - which was being incorrectly collected from the recipient at this time. Part of the large Watt & DeSaulles correspondence. |
