| Description: | 3c (11), horizontal strip of 3, plate 4: 24-26R4, together with three singles (11A), and vertical pair of 1c (9). All are struck with a blue Richmond, VA CDS, to Stockton, CA (black Stockton CDS), then forwarded, due 6c, to Hills Ferry, CA. The year is not 100% clear but based upon the stamps on the cover and the rate, it is most likely 1855 (possibly 1856). The 3c plate 4 was available in early 1855, while the other #11 plates : 6,7,8 were not available until 1856. The stamps add up to 20c and pay the double 10c rate over 3000 miles to Stockton. From there, it was re-rated and marked "ford 6", which is due at a double 3c rate, to Hills Ferry. This cover has a cameo ad corner card at upper left in blue. |
