Description:

Two Ty III (#15) 10c stamps, and a single Ty II (#7) 1c stamp amount to a 1c over payment of the 20c rate direct to France, via Havre.

The cover entered the mails with a New Orleans Nov 29 CDS, and received a red New York exchange marking on Dec 13. Although not legible, it should show "Am" for American packet. This was carried on the Havre line steamer "Arago" which left NY on Dec 13, 1856 and arrived in Havre on Dec 27. The "Outre-Mer 27-Dec-56", along with the French 6 decimes due, confirms the sailing and rate. It was carried by railroad to Paris, then on to Fumel on Dec 28.
