Description: | Hartford Penny Post 2 Cts double oval handstamp on "from the mails" cover addressed to a street address in Hartford. This originated in Middletown, CT, franked with a 3c Dull Red #11A, which pre-paid the postage to the Hartford PO. The Hartford Penny Post could not locate the addressee, and marked the cover "Not Found". The cover was then Advertised, and, presumably picked up, for 1c, as indicated via the pencil '1' marking. The stamp appears to be a Deep Claret, approaching Plum, although it has not been treated or carefully checked as of yet. There are only 4 recorded examples of the Hartford Penny Post marking. This is the only one franked with an imperforate 1851-issue stamp. Two of the others are franked with a 3c #26, while the other is stampless. |
