Description:

Messenkope's black on green adhesive (#106L1, two covers: the first with a uncancelled example (full margings, creased) that entered the mails at New York with 9 April 5c due postmark, ex Haub; the second, used after Dunham had taken over the express with the "Messenkope's" portion torn away at top of the stamp and placed upside down on the cover, reflecting the change of local post ownerships, palced over a 3c 1851 issue adhesive and tied by New York 15 March postmark

There are numerous examples of the complete adhesive known on cover but fewer than ten showing use of a cut adhesive (or with name inked).
