Description: | 3c, #11A, paying a single rate from Detroit to New York. This shows an early registered letter handstamp, prior to the 1855 government registry system. There are two examples of this, one on a stampless cover, illustrated in Milgram's book on Registered Mail, and this one, being the only stamped example. The use of the terms "Money" and also "Registered" on a US cover is quite unusual. Canada frequently used the term "Money", while the US leaned more towards "Registered". The fact that Detroit is near the border with Canada, no doubt influenced this. Ex Malcolm, Jarrett, Eubanks |
