[MAIL ROUTE] arc handstamp of New York and manuscript "12½" rate on folded letter, signed by Glendy Burke, from New Orleans dated May 9, 1829 to New York City, docketed as recieved on June 9, 1829, endorsed to, and carried on, theship Illinois that arrived New York on June 6, 1829

Since steamboats regularly passed from Staten Island to New York, this stretch of water was also considered a post road after 1823. Consequently,  letters from New Orleans to New York were delivered at the port of arrival as but mail route letters with 12½ cents postage due (for the 100 mile carriage on the Mississippi Rivertyo Balize plus the short distance from Staten Island to New York.
