Description:	[MAIL ROUTE] in arc, red handstamp and magenta manuscript "18¾" rate on folded letter from New York City, dated October 5, 1827, to Providence, RI, docketed as received October 9, the earliest reported use of this marking with fewer than ten reported examples, extremely fine Providence postmaster BH Wheeler, rated this inbound ship letter at full postage as though it had been carried overland. This was in error due to his mis-interperatation of PMG McLean's correspondence on how to rate letter received from coastal sailing vessels
