Description: | Mail Route red straight line handstamp on 1849 folded letter from Isle of Wight, VA by costal vessel to "Near Macon" Georgia, entered the mails with red Savannah Geo Jun 1 datestamp and encircled "6" due rate, this marking was used her 19 years after Mail Route markings were obsoleted and was used here to indicate the extra penny was to due as a way fee, the later of only two known uses, see page 156 in ASCC Volume 2, page 156 where this cover is illustrated |
