Description: | Manila envelope marked with two black strikes of "40" inside a rounded rectangle, paying the 1st class fee from California to New York state. Single strike of San Francisco CAL cds dated Feb 4 (1850) Addressed to Allen M. Sherman, a lawyer and judge in Orange Co. NY Very faint manuscript "Paid" underneath upper strike of "40". On reverse in pencil is "Rich Gulch / Jany 20/1850" Envelope appears to have carried a thick letter, as the envelope flap is distorted at the top. |
