Description:

"San Francisco Mar 16" circular datestamp on blue folded letter sent collect to Reims, France.  Letter datelined San Francisco 15 March 1860, endorsed "Overland Mail Via Los Angeles". Carried on Butterfield route overland stagecoach leaving San Francisco on March 16, 1860, arriving at St. Louis on April 6. "New York 3 Apr 11" exchange office marking showing a debit to France of 3c.

Carried on Cunard liner "Arabia" which left New York April 11, 1860, arrived at Liverpool on April 22. "Et Unis Serv Br. A.C. L 23 Avril 60" French entry marking indicating that the letter was from the United States by British service via England and entered France at Calais, processed on the ambulent or railroad car to Paris by postal team or brigade "L"

Boxed "15" marking applied in Paris indicating the French Convention rate of 15c or 8 decimes for a single rate unpaid letter. "8" marking indicating 8 decimes due upon delivery. "Paris 24 Avril 60" transit marking and "Reims 24 Avril 60" arrival marking on back.

Docketing "H. Schroeder & Co. San Francisco 15 Mar.  R (received) 24 Avril". Ex Noel.
