Description:

3-cents red on buff Die 1 Nesbitt postal entire (U2), with Nesbitt seal on rear flap, with "Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express Stockton." red oval marking (Leutzinger type 1-12) used as a handstamped 25-cents frank of Stockton, addressed to San Francisco. Bisagno correspondence. Docketing on back: "Letter, Los Angeles, BB."  Note that the manuscript "25c" is in sender's handwriting, meaning it was written in Los Angeles.

This cover predates the earliest printed franks of Wells, Fargo & Co., which were introduced in August 1855. 25c express fee probably for carriage from Los Angeles via Stockton to San Francisco. According to Leutzinger the Wells, Fargo & Co. offices in Los Angeles and Stockton were first published in the company's directories and advertisements in 1855.
