Description:

1874 Plimpton Issue 1c light blue on orange postal entire (U116), ungummed rear flap with "Chicago Ill." circular rate marking (Piszkiewicz no. C-32) to Adamsville, Pa., with Lumber Co. corner card. Blue "Adamsville, Pa. Oct 20, 1886" backstamp. Third class mail such as this rarely has a backstamp, much less a year dated cds from this era. The backstamp continues under the flap, which indicates that the flap was open when struck, probably for postal inspection to make sure only printed matter was enclosed. UPSS no. 282, wmk. 6.

The return address is in the old wholesale lumber district along the Illinois-Michigan Canal. Lumber ships came down Lake Michigan and unloaded lumber there for distribution throughout the Midwest. Information courtesy of Leonard Piszkiewicz.
