2c carmine type III (267) tied by "New York, N.Y. May 13 1896" flag cancel on cover to local street address. Manuscript markings "not found" and "2013 Lexington Ave." Purple handstamp: "Return to Sender, Cannot  ---- by N.Y. P.O., May 19, 1896, do not ---- in this envelope or wrapper."

On back is note: "Opened by Wm. P. Roberts, 2013 Lexington Ave., Not for me". Magenta handstamp on back "Letter Returned to P.O., New York, N.Y. By Carrier", and bister brown Official Seal (OX7) with oval cancel. Backstamps: 3rd Ave. N.Y. City R.P.O., Train 37, May 16, and Train 18, May 18 1896. Other N.Y.C. transit markings. Illustrated merchant's corner card with globe.
