Description:

Boyd's City Express, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Green (20L4). Cut to shape, grid cancel, tied by red "Paid/J.T.B." two-line handstamp, matching "Boyd's City Express Post, Mar. 30 2" oval datestamp on 1848 folded letter from Boston to New York City street address, carried by Gay & Co.'s Express, sender's endorsement and red "Gay & Co.'s Express, From 1 Wall Street, New-York" oval handstamp partly covered by Boyd's stamp. Letter is datelined "Boston March 27, 1848". and mentions that a $300 draft is enclosed. This is known an an express "money letter".

James Gay and E. Littlefield established Gay's Express at Boston in 1842. The company also had an office in New York City.

Although inter-city expresses had been banned from carrying letters since July 1, 1845, letters accompanying freight were permitted, and this is a rare example of such mail delivered locally by Boyd's, ex Golden
