Description:

"American Letter Mail Company Office No. 16 State Street Boston" red oval marking (Bowman type F04) and matching "6" collect handstamp on undated outer folded letter sheet to W.H. Blackfield, Pearl Street, New York. Penciled "Enquire 134", evidently the street number. Ex John Olenkiewicz

ALM Co. moved their offices from 12 to 16 State Street in Boston in March 1845, a few months before shutting down on June 30, 1845. Because of this short period of use this particular oval office marking is considerably scarcer that the earlier marking with 12 State Street address. The handstamped "6" collect marking is Bowman type C-3, with recorded dates of use from May 1 to June 23, 1845, which further narrows down the probable date of this cover.
