Description:

1853 3c red on white die 1, note size (U1) "Philadelphia Pa. Jan. 2" circular datestamp (Clarke type 63b), Blood's Penny Post (1c) bronze on lilac adhesive (!5L14) acid tied,"Blood's Despatch Jan. 2, 10½ A.M." circular datestamp (ASCC type 13), to Martinsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia).

UPSS no. 1, wmk 1, size 2, knife 2. 
Die 1 in note size envelope was only issued in white paper, not buff.
Note the hand-applied gum on envelope flap. Hand gumming is characterized by straight ends of the gum and by an inner edge which folows the outline of the envelope flap, and is called "Square Gum"  or "Hand Gummed" by collectors. Automatic gumming by machine began during the 1874 Plimpton contract, identified by rounded corners of the gum on the top flap.
