Description:

Austria 1864 3 kreuzer green, perf. 9½, embossed coat-of-arms issue (Scott #23), tied by "Wien 16/X" (1865) oval datestamp, on folded letter, local use in Wien. 35mm "Neubau Wien 16/10" backstamp, local district in inner Wien.

Example of 3 kr. drop letter rate, effective November 1, 1858. The letter is an invoice from Andre Hofer firm, datelined "Salzburg am 14 Oktober 1865", with 5 kr. revenue stamp affixed at upper left with manuscript cancel. Since Salzburg is 156 miles by train to the west of Wien, this letter was evidently privately carried to Wien for deposit at the post office, possibly with other letters addressed to the company's numerous customers in Wien, to avoid paying 15 kreuzer postage from Salzburg for each letter based on rate for distances over 20 meilen per loth, equal to 141 U.S. miles. It was quite a savings in postage (80%) for the firm.
