3c red on white Star Die postal entire (U26) with "Astoria Ogn Jul. 2" (1861) circular datestamp, to San Francisco, California.

Cover is addressed to Fannie Crittenden of San Francisco. Docketing on back of envelope identifies the sender as "Mary Adair 1861", who was the wife of John Adair, first U.S. Customs Collector for Astoria, appointed by President Polk, and served for succeeding administrations until 1861.  Adair and his family arrived in Astoria on April 3, 1849 in the newly established Territory of Oregon. Photo shows Astoria's second custom house taken just before its demolition in 1918. It was built in 1852 to replace the first one destroyed by fire.
