1859 10c green type V, small 'Curl" on forehead, position 78L2 (#35 variety) tied by Portland, Or double circle datestamp on yellow cover endorsed "Via Los angelous" for the Butterfield Overland Route to St. Louis. This route was closed in early 1861 because of the impending start of the Civil War. The last Overland Mail Company mail bag left St. Louis, Missouri, March 18, 1861. The only visible first letter of the month in the postmark is 'A' which could be either April or August, pointing  to a 1860 use, as the EDU of #35 is April 29, 1859.  Portland postmark is Whittlesey type 6, 26mm, with a EKU of 24 Sept. 1859.

Scarce 1860 overland use from Portland, Oregon to Clinton, Kansas (Territory). From Portland to San Francisco by ship. Then by stage to Los Angeles to St. Louis to Clinton, Kansas. Because this cover originated in Portland and the distance to destination as travelled was over 3,000 miles the rate was 10 cents.
