1866 Wells Fargo use from Boston via New York City on 1864 3c pink on white postal entire (U58) with Mar 30, 1866 32mm black cds applied by Wells Fargo office in Boston, reverse has scarce large oval "Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express Boston" (Leutzinger type 5-1), indicia cancelled by blue "Wells, Fargo & Cos Express New-York Mar 31" circular datestamp (Leutzinger type 11-3) addressed to Canyon City, Grant County, eastern Oregon. Misspelled in address as "Cannon City".  Pencil notation at upper left "Pd. --D", which evidently indicates Express fee paid.  Original letter enclosed from Windsor, Kennebec County, Maine.

Carried overland via Salt Lake City, Boise and The Dalles. Letter is from wife about sending gold as she is strapped for cash! Unusual transcontinental Wells Fargo use without printed frank, east coast to west coast usage.

Excerpts from letter: "I know you will be glad to get this. I do not see why that Draft (for gold) did not come. I had better get on to the Office of Wells Fargo Co. in Boston to see if I could hear from it, and they wrote me that the Gold was registered in my name but was no longer there and did not receive it, I had better have the 2nd Draft sent so I have to wait not patiently but impatiently for the next one , which you must send as quick as you can, but I suppose you will now send it before you get this. I am completely strapped in the pocket. . . . Goodbye with love and kisses from your wife, Annie M. Sproul.
