Description:

Andrew Jackson. Free frank "Free Andrew Jackson" on part of folded letter to Eliza Hamilton, care of of Col. James A. Hamilton in New York, red "City of Washington Oct. 5" (1831) circular datestamp with matching "Free" handstamp. Ex Stevens.

Docketing reads "Washington Oct. 4th 1831".  Elizabeth (Eliza) Schuyler Hamilton (1757-1854) was the widow of Alexander Hamilton. Col. James A. Hamilton (1788-1878) was a soldier, acting Secretary of State under Jackson in 1829, and the third son of Alexander Hamilton. He entered politics as a Democrat and supporter of Andrew Jackson.  At the time of this letter Hamilton was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Excerpt from letter " . . . had a very clever beau (Lieut. Samuel) Barron of the Navy". The letter was sent and signed by M.A. Easton.
