Trieste, Austria to Lyons, France via Kingdom of Sardinia in northern Italy. "Trieste Franco (Paid) 29 Sep. 1839" circular datestamp. This indicated postage paid to the Sardinian border. "Franco" (Paid) red straightline marking.

"LF" red marking meaning "Letter Francaise" (destined for France), "T.S.1" red marking indicating "Transit Sarde", applied to letters in transit through Sardinia destined for France. The "1" in this marking indicates the charge to France for Sardinian transit, based on distance, in this case the first rayon (zone). Sardinia transit red circular datestamp 6 Oct. Letter is datelined "Trieste 29 Sep. 1839".  French arrival marking on back.
