Description:

1861 Wells Fargo cover to Paris. 1857 1c blue (24), 3c dull red pair (26), 10c green type V pair (35) all tied on 3c red on buff Star Die front (U27) addressed to Paris, France, all with identical red open grid cancels applied in NY, with Wells, Fargo & Co. Paid printed frank beneath stamps, blue oval "Paid" marking applied by Wells Fargo in San Francisco indicating express fee paid, red boxed "PD" (Paid to Destination) applied in Paris, "New York Paid 12 Oct. 26" (1861) red exchange office circular datestamp, red orangeĀ  "Etats-Unis Serv. Am. Calais 10 Nov. 61" marking applied in Paris. This French marking indicates that letter was from the United States by American service via Great Britain and entered France at Calais.

The ms. endorsement "Per Steamer" indicates that Wells Fargo carried this cover privately by steamships via Panama to New York, where the stamps were cancelled and the letter entered the mails. It is not known with certainty where the stamps were applied, either in in SF or NY, but more likely in SF.

This is a double weight letter with 12c credited to France, carried under the 1857 U.S.-France Convention, which was 15c per 1/4 ounce (7Ā½ grams), in this case 30c. It was carried by the North German Lloyd (NGL) packet "New York", which departed New York 26 October 1861, arrived in Southampton 9 November, and from there to Calais to enter the French mails by fast train to Paris, arriving 10 November. There are no British transit markings on this cover because the mails were sent closed to France. Rate and route information courtesy of Steve Walske.
