Description:

"Albany N.Y. Oct. 2" (1883) circular datestamp and fancy cancel on 2c vermilon on fawn 1875 Plimpton Issue postal entire (U147) to Masonville, Delaware County, N.Y. Rear flap is sealed indicating first class rate. Corner card of Delaware & Hudson Canal Co., General Freight Office, Albany, N.Y.  Blue "Masonville, N.Y. Oct. 4" backstamp.

This is a 2nd day of use of new 2c per half ounce first class letter rate. When originally issued these 2c stamped envelopes were designed for drop letters for post offices with carrier delivery. When the first class letter rate was reduced from 3c to 2c effective Oct. 1, 1883,  these 2c envelopes were pressed into service for first class mail.
