Description:

CSA 1862 5c blue pair (#7) tied by "MobileĀ  Ala. Jan. 16 1863" circular datestamp on petite cover to "Lieut. Col. John H. Higley, 40th Ala. Reg., Vicksburg, Miss".

Colonel John Hunt Higley, CSA (1830-1889) served in the 2nd, 3rd and 40th Alabama regiments during the Civil War. He fought in many battles, and was in command of the famous Baker's Brigade in the Battle of Atlanta (July 22, 1864). He was captured after the siege and fall of Vicksburg (July 4, 1863). The 40th Alabama Infantry flag that was captured in Vicksburg went to Col. Higley, and later to his son William Marshall Higley. On July 14, 1913 the flag was given to the department. Col. Higley was described as a man of character and majestic physique. The image here is of Col. Higley during the war.
