Origin: Habana, CUBA
Destination: Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA

Description:

1872 Habana to Buenos Aires via St.Thomas and Rio de Janeiro. Cover (wrapper): on company watermarked paper and with corresponding company blue stamp ‘Sama Sotolongo Y Co, Habana’. Sent from Habana 24 Dec 1872 and received in Buenos Aires 28 Feb 1873 (docketed inside) at time of ‘Ten years war’ in Cuba. GB 4d pl.12 (Sc#43) and US 10c (Sc#150) stamps applied by sender in Cuba. Spanish steamer of Ramon de Herrera line, based in Habana, (which service was paid in cash) carried the cover privately to St.Thomas, DWI where the cover was entered to the post system. GB 4d stamp cancelled by St.Thomas circular datestamp 30/1/1873 which is possibly unique for similar destination letters, as the stamp supposedly remains uncancelled till Rio de Janeiro. US Brazil Mail Steamship Co ship “Merrimack” carried the cover from St.Thomas to Rio de Janeiro. The way was paid by US 10c stamp cork cancelled in Rio. Rio de Janeiro arrival circular datestamp 18 Feb 73 applied on back of the cover. Pacific Steam Navigation Co ship service from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires supposed to be paid by GB 4d. But the stamp appeared to have already been cancelled in St.Thomas, DWI. Probably by this reason red crayon due mark “10” was applied (GB stamp tied by “0”) for way to Argentina.
