This cover dates from 1869 or 1870. Prof. Cyrus Morris Dodd (1826-1897) taught Latin at Indiana State University, then called Indiana State Normal School (founded 1865) in Terre Haute, Ind. In 1869, at the invitation of President Mark Hopkins he accepted the chair of Mathematics at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. remaining there until his death in 1897.

Horace Capron served as U.S. Commissioner of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. from Dec. 4, 1867 to July 31, 1871.
