Description:

This exceptional envelope was irreparably damaged with the removal of the stamp! But it remains, however, of great interest because it is a registered letter sent to Italy with the Prussian closed mail. It was sent from Volcano (California) on 9.1.1866 by an Italian immigrant who settled in Amador county. The letter was loaded onto the North German Lloyd steamship “New York” on February 10 (New York / Registered double-circle stamp in black ink!). Once in Europe, the journey of the letter is "told" by a series of other stamps and handwritten numbers affixed both in front and behind. There would be many other things to say about this envelope but to shorten the topic I ask the forum experts what was the face value of the stamp affixed to the top left?

P.s. Sorry for my basic English.
