Description:

"Catskill N.Y. Aug 4" (1845) red 30mm circular datestamp (outer circle very faint) and matching "Paid" and "10" handstamps on double rate folded letter to Albany, N.Y.

Docketed "1845 August 6, Powers & Day". Catskill and Albany are only 34 miles apart, so this letter must be double rate, in excess of ½ ounce, as letter contents mention a copy of a legal document enclosed to be returned to sender. The manuscript notation on front "Paid. P & D" are the initials of the sender (Powers & Day).

James Powers (1785 – 1868) was an American lawyer and politician from Catskill, N.Y. He was a member of the New York State Senate (3rd District) from 1836 to 1839, and delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1846.
