Colonel Edward Dickinson Baker (born London, England on 24 February 1811) died in the battle of Ball’s Bluff (Virginia) on 21 October 1861, commanding troops ordered to re-inforce General Charles Stone’s brigade. Baker holds the dubious distinction of being the only US senator killed during a military engagement. The battle at Ball’s Bluff was an unmitigated Union disaster, caused in part by Baker’s combat inexperience, unfamiliar terrain, and his poor understanding of military logistics.
