Description:

1861 3c rose (65) with pen cancel and "Schuylkill, Pa. Sept. 1" manuscript postmark, "Advertised" boxed handstamp, on cover to Lebanon, Lebanon County. Pa.

This letter was advertised in the local Lebanon newspaper (if there was one) when the addressee failed to pick it up at the post office. The advertising fee charged to the recipient claiming it was 1c. The time that a letter was to be held before being advertised varied with the size of the office, from six weeks for offices with low revenues (such as this example) to once a week for the larger offices. If there was no local newspaper, which was true for many small offices, manuscript lists of undelivered letters were to be posted in public places.
