Description:

SG 170 1 penny Lilac Die I. Mailed from Newark England to a Miss M. L. Fletching at the Bank House in York England on August 23, 1881. It was first sent by train via Ollerton arriving in York the same day where it was also postmarked. The cover was forwarded to Bedale, where it arrived that same day. The next day, August 24, it was sent back to York arriving late in the day, where it was, once again, postmarked and for some reason sent back to Bedale, where it is postmarked on August 25th. That very same day it was postmarked again and sent back through York where it was postmarked for August 26, and then was forwarded via train north to Helmsley, arriving that same day. It left Helmsley on August 27, this time for Leeds, where it was postmarked August 29. From there it traveled through Rotherham where it was postmarked for August 30 and then traveled to Bawtry. Ultimately the trip took 7 days and covered a bit over 400 miles. This distance between where it had been mailed and its ultimate destination is 27 miles by train and would have taken about 40 minutes.
