Description:

1873 3c green (158) on unused, unsealed envelope addressed to J.M. Bradstreet & Son, Boston, Mass., with original contents: a business form that was sent to Rolf Sowle & Co., Gouldsboro, Hancock County, Maine, Oct. 17, 1874.

John M. Bradstreet ran a credit reporting agency agency in Boston, and later merged (1933) with competitor Robert Graham Dun to form Dun & Bradstreet Corporation, a company that provides commercial data, analytics, and insights for businesses. The company was formed to create a network of correspondents throughout the U.S. who would provide reliable, objective credit information to subscribers. In the late 19th Century the company expanded its operations across international boundaries. This form gives insight into the type of business information the firm acquired for its clients. From its inception the company assigned credit ratings, which rate a debtor's ability to pay back debt by making timely principal and interest payments and the likelihood of default.
