Description:

"Tahlequah, Ark. Oct. 25" (1855) cds on 3c red on buff Nesbitt postal entire (U10) to Rehoboth, Mass. Docketed received Nov. 16 1855 faintly in pencil at left. Ex-Allen.

Tahlequah was capital of Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (now Cherokee County, Oklahoma). Arkansas Territory was larger than the state. After statehood in 1836, the left-over area to the west had post offices, such as Tahlequah, that continued for some years to use an Arkansas abbreviation in the postmarks although really they were in the "Indian Country." Actually Indian Territory (early name was Indian Country) never had a territorial form of government.
