Description:

This is paying the single 5c rate via British Open Mail to France, during the Three-Months period (Jan-Mar 1857) immediately prior to the US-France Treaty of April 1, 1857.

This sailed on the Cunard steamer Niagara, January 14, out of Boston. It went through the New York Exchange office and was dated there Jan 13, Br Pkt.

Being a three-months period cover, carried via British Packet, it received the GB 1f60c Tray marking indicating the amount France owed Britain for conveyance, per 30 grams of mail.

On arrival in France, it was marked 8 decimes due (a single rate).
