Description:

Vertical Strip of three of Scott #12, Positions 3-13-23R1. Relief A-B-C.

Position 23R is the defective/damaged transfer position.
This is one of only two known imperforate defective transfers in any multiple, on or off cover. The other is a horizontal strip of three, also on a cover to France.

This is paying the single rate under the US-France treaty of 1857 of 15c to France.
A 12c credit to France is indicated as this sailed on the Cunard steamer Europa, May 20 out of Boston (not New York - it was just exchanged there).
