Description: | Business size "Penalty" Envelope for the US Land Office, Seattle Washington, US Department of the Interior. Used for official business, it was sent by Registered Mail, requiring the addition of a Scott's US #272 8-cent Violet Brown, tied by a single black double oval Seattle WA postmark with no date. Stamp is also tied by a watery green, three line registration marking dated June 18, 1896. Additional markings include a four digit number in darker green and two strikes of a note to the postmaster in violet to return the envelope if not delivered in 40 days in violet. A straight line italic violet "NOT CLAIMED" near center, with a pointing hand marking in violet "RETURN / TO / SENDER". Additional Seattle registration marking on reverse dated August 8, 1896 indicating its return to the Seattle post office. Addressed to a lawyer Mr. D. Hawk. |
