"Liverpool De 22 1854" green circular datestamp, "19 Cents" British marking, and "24" New York Exchange Office marking (Hubbard-Winter #304), on folded letter addressed to New York and endorsed "per "Asia". Green oval Liverpool marking on reverse. Letter is datelined "per Asia" and "Liverpool 22nd. December 1854."

This letter was carried by the Cunard steamship "Asia" which departed Liverpool on 23 Dec. 1854 and arrived in Boston on 4 Jan. 1855, and then transported by railway to New York.

The recipient, Abraham Bell and Sons, was a New York City merchant shipping firm specializing in the export of Southern cotton to the British Isles; the firm's correspondence and records have been preserved and are currently in the M.E. Grenander Dept. of Special Collections and Archives, University Libraries, State University of New York at Albany, N.Y.
