Description:

"New Orleans La. Feb 14" (1851) red circular datestamp with manuscript "40" collect rate on large intact amber wrapper that contained legal documents, addressed to the Clerk of the District Court, Marshall, Harrison Couny, Texas. 1851 docketing.

Since the distance from New Orleans to Marshall, Texas is 360 miles on modern roads by shortest route, this is a 4 x 10c rate, over 300 miles zone, for a cover weighing over 1½ oz. up to 2 oz. Note the pelican feeding its chicks in the design of the seal of William Shawn, Notary Public at New Orleans - the brown pelican is similarly pictured in the official state seal of Louisiana. Louisiana has been called "The Pelican State" since colonial times.
