Description:

This is a letter sent with the 22¢ rate to a German State served by the Thurn & Taxis Post. It was posted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 3 July 1855, and addressed to Gaildorf, Baden Württemberg. The 22¢ postage was paid in cash as confirmed by the two black postmarks “PAID” and “22” in the upper right corner. The letter was endorsed "via Bremen" in black ink. Sent to the New York exchange office, the letter was struck with the 32 mm red orange circular datestamp, “N.YORK 8 U.S. PKT/(date)/PAID” (1) showing the date that the letter was forwarded from New York and an 8¢ credit to Bremen, the appropriate credit from 1853. Since an American contract packet was to carry the letter to Bremen, the United States was entitled to keep all of the prepayment except the 1¢ Bremen and 7¢ German transit fees. The letter was placed in the mails that were carried from New York on 16 July 1855 by the Ocean Line steamship Hermann, arriving at Bremerhaven on 1 August 1855.(2) The three-lined entry marking, “AMERICA/ UBER BREMEN/FRANCO”, was struck in blue ink, showing that the letter was fully paid to destination.(3) The letter was turned over to the Thurn & Taxis Post, which served the Baden Württemberg. It reached the main distribution office of the Thurn & Taxis Post in the southern region, Frankfurt, on 3 August 1855 and received the black 22 mm double circle datestamp of 3 August 1855 on the reverse. The letter arrived at Gaildorf on 5 August and received the 22 mm circular datestamp in black ink, also on the reverse.
