Description:

Lombardy-Venetia 1850 45c dark blue type III hand-made paper in mixed franking of different papers with 1854 15c bright red type III machine-made paper tied by two strikes of "Milano 21/5" (1856) circular datestamp on blue folded cover to Modena, with "Modena 22 Magg. (May) 1856" arrival backstamp. An interesting item sent from 2nd Austrian to the 2nd Italian section or zone during the LEGA postal treaty of January 1854, rate of 60c. "Balabio e C. Milano" mechant handstamp. Certificates from Karl Huber of Linz, 1969, and Dr. Ulrich Ferchenbauer of Wien, 2017. Signed by Ferchenbauer in lower right corner.

Modena at that time was ruled by Archduke Francis V of the Duchy of Modena and Reggio, a small northwestern Italian state that existed from 1452 to 1859.
