Description:

"Forwarded By Overton & Co. 3 Broad Street. New York" red oval and manuscript "Paid 6" on three-page folded letter from New York dated August 9, 1844 to Peekskill, Westchester County, N.Y.,  from father to his daughter. Excerpt: "(Aug.) 8th: I rec'd this morning a letter by the express mail, from you."

In early August 1844, Overton & Co. acquired Damon & Co. to extend operations northward to Albany via the Hudson River. Letters were carried up the Hudson River by Overton's messengers on Troy Day line steamers and provided service to Caldwell, Peekskill, West Point, Cold Spring, Newburg, Fishkill, Poughkeepsie, Catskill, Hudson and Albany.

This is the earliest recorded use of of an Overton cover going to a town in Westchester County, N.Y. after the acquisition of Damon & Co.'s route along the Hudson River.

The John Bowman census lists two other Overton & Co. covers going to Peekskill, not including this one.
