Origin: New York, New York, UNITED STATES
Destination: North Manchester, Indiana, UNITED STATES

Description:

This as-found registered cover is from the “New York Emporium of Fashions” and sent to North Manchester, Indiana. The 13 cents worth of stamps are long gone.

The cover front has a blue ink New York Branch “D” stamp dated “FEB 15 1878”. (1878 is the first year per the Wayne Schuetz single frame exhibit posted on this site) The first registration number looks to be 14061 at NYC. There are two other registration numbers on the front. One is in orange pencil 7296 at the bottom center. The third is 1915 in ink at the top center. There also are the initials “OW” or “DW” on the front in blue pencil.

The back of the cover has the EM-2 examiners stamp in blue ink dated the same as the Branch “D” stamp, “FEB 15 1878”.

This cover may document the earliest usage of the Type EM-2 Registered examination handstamp.

I want to thank Wayne Schuetz for his work on his boards. I am less than one year into my formal postal history education using PhilaMercury and am excited to see what the future holds.
