Austria 9 kreuzer dark blue Type IIIa (#5g.) tied by "Wien 10/3, 1 M" (1853) circular datestamp on fancy embossed lady's cover to Sion, in Canton Valais, Switzerland. Red oval "Bollo Insufficiente" marking indicating only partially paid. "Brigue 10 Mars 53" Swiss transit marking, "Sion 17 Mars 53" Swiss arrival marking. Manuscript "14" rating with another 20 centimes interior postage due, for a total of 70 centimes postage due, marked in red crayon, collected from the recipient. A rare use.

The Austria 9 kr. stamp paid the postage to the border of Austrian Empire. 9 kr. was the rate for over 20 meilen (Austrian post miles) equal to 151 km, per loth (16 grams). In this case the distance from Wien (Vienna) to the Swiss border town of Brig-Glis (French: Brigue) was 870 km.
