5c 1856 Issue Scott #12 strip of three, used on cover from New Orleans, to Bordeaux, France.

This cover entered the mails in New Orleans on July 19, 1857. It was sent under the French Treaty of April 1, 1857, and sailed from Boston, on the Cunard steamer "America", that left Boston on July 29. While in Boston it was postmarked with the Boston exchange marking, indicating a 12c credit to France, for a single letter rate via British packet under the treaty. The US retained 3c for US inland transit.

The steamer "America" arrived in Liverpool on August 10th. It was marked PD, to indicate fully paid to the destination. There are French transit back stamps indicating this cover made it to Paris on Aug 11, and went in transit to Bordeaux the same day. It arrived in Bordeaux on Aug 12. Although there is no such back stamp, it seems likely that this entered France via Calais and proceeded from there to Paris via rail.
