Description:

Commissary General of Prisoners, OFFICIAL BUSINESS, imprinted cover with matching stationery postmarked WASHINGTON, D.C., FREE to Mina, New York. The Civil War had just ended 3 days prior to the writing of this letter. Benjamin F. Fritts, enlisted as private with the 112th NY, Company D, on 15 August 1862. Benjamin was wounded in the arm on 1 June 1864 at the Battle of Cold Harbor, VA. Records state that he started to walk to the White House thereafter and not heard from since.
