Postmark: Jan 8, 1872 (The 10₵ per ⅓ oz. fully paid rate to France)
Origin: Philadelphia, UNITED STATES
Destination: Dunkerque, FRANCE

The 10₵ per ⅓ oz. fully paid rate to France finally appeared in postal rate tables in November 1871. This is a letter from the United States to France via the United Kingdom paid with the announced 10₵ rate. This envelope with contents was posted at Philadelphia on 8 January 1872, and was addressed to Dunkerque. The letter was paid with a couple of 2₵ brown and a couple of 3₵ green 1870 ungrilled National Bank Note adhesives tied to the envelope with a 26 mm red orange circular datestamp, PHILADELPHIA/(date)/PAID. A New York exchange office clerk marked a 6₵ credit to the United Kingdom with a large manuscript "6" in red orange pencil in the center of the envelope. Under the 1869 U.S.-U.K. convention the United States was entitled to 2₵ internal and 2₵ sea postage on this letter, leaving 6₵ to be credited to the United Kingdom. The letter was bagged for the sailing from New York of the Hapag Line steamship Silesia, departing New York on 11 January and arriving at Plymouth on 22 January 1872.(1) The letter arrived at London the next day, 23 January 1872, and received a 25 mm red orange circular datestamp that showed the letter was fully paid. A London clerk also marked the small 17 x 14 mm red orange oval hand-stamp “PD” a marking used on paid letters sent to France. The letter entered France the same day, and received in the right left corner a poorly struck 21 mm black double circle datestamp “ANGL./ (date)/AMB. CALAIS L”. This marking showed that the letter was from the United Kingdom and was handled on the railroad postal car (ambulant) from Calais to Paris by postal brigade "L." The letter reached Dunkerque later the same day. On the reverse is a 23 mm black double circle arrival datestamp. (1) Hubbard and Winter - North Atlantic Mail Sailings 1840-75 - pag.188
