Red "Steamboat 18 3/4" in 30mm circle on Jan. 12, 1844 folded letter from New York to Boston. This accounting marking was used at Boston, and the postage due is included in the handstamp. The rate was established in 1825 for distances of 150 to 400 miles. Ex-Eggen.

It is thought that this postmark device was made because of the high volume of New York mail received at Boston.

Letter contents refer to a shipment of 6 barrels of Sizing (202 gallons), delivered by the schooner Walcott. Sizing is a commodity used for paper or textile manufacturing, in the form of gelatin or resin.
