"Steam-Boat" fancy scroll marking (applied in Buffalo, N.Y.) and blue manuscript "25" (cents) collect marking on folded letter to Perry Village, Genesee County, N.Y.  Letter is datelined "Detroit Oct 25 1840" and then continues by another family member datelined "Detroit Nov. 1st 1840."

This letter was carried by a non-contract steamboat on Lake Erie, whose master was paid 2c by the postmaster in Buffalo, N.Y., where it entered the mails.

The village of Perry in what was then Genesee County, N.Y. is now in Wyoming County. The post office in Perry was established in 1815.
